BRE 208 Reliability, Validity, & Generalizability in Quantitative & Qualitative Research

This course introduces the foundational concepts of reliability, validity, and generalisability in quantitative research. Learners will develop a basic understanding of how research findings are evaluated for consistency, accuracy, and applicability.

Through practical examples and simple research scenarios, learners will learn to recognise common strengths and limitations in quantitative studies.

This course fulfills the following learning goals:

1. Describe differences between qualitative and quantitative research (IFTCC A1, A2).

2. Define key quantitative research terminology, including construct, operational definition, levels of measurement, null hypothesis, internal validity, external validity, test–retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, generalizability, and statistical significance (IFTCC A1).

3. Identify simple factors that may affect the trustworthiness of quantitative research findings. (IFTCC A1 , A2).

4. Identify common strengths and limitations in quantitative research examples (IFTCC A1, A2, A3).
