About Course
Whether you work in mental health services, or as a member of clergy, or simply as someone struggling with sexual addiction, this workshop will provide a basic understanding of sex addiction. We will discuss its cyclical nature and underlying causes, while emphasizing the critical role of community support in recovery. We will review the cycle of sexual addiction which includes: preoccupation, ritualization, compulsive sexual behavior, and pain/shame. Addiction patterns are often rooted in unresolved trauma, attachment issues, and cognitive distortions, which become deeply ingrained over time. These etiological issues necessitate that “community” and connection become an integral part of the recovery process.
The workshop will draw on the work of experts like Patrick Carnes and will highlight how early life experiences, such as emotional neglect, abuse, or exposure to pornography, can contribute to the development of addictive behaviors. Additionally, the neurobiological effects of sex addiction will be discussed, showing how compulsive sexual behavior can alter brain chemistry in ways similar to substance addiction. Recovery from sex addiction will require more than just stopping problematic behaviors; it will involve addressing the deeper emotional and psychological issues that drive the addiction. A significant emphasis will be placed on the importance of community in the recovery process. Participants will learn that addicts must engage community support for sustained recovery. These communities will provide accountability, encouragement, and a space for sharing experiences, all of which are essential for long-term healing. By understanding the intricate dynamics of sex addiction and leveraging the power of community support, individuals will be better equipped to embark on a transformative and enduring recovery journey.
